The Gazans are celebrating an end to the Israeli-Hamas ceasefire that ended an 11-day conflict |
Thousands of Gazans took to the streets on Friday in an attempt to end an 11-day war between Israel and Hamas, a Palestinian militant group.
But as a sign of the violence that led to the violence, Israeli troops opened fire on young Palestinians surrounding the al-Aqsa mosque in the Old City of Jerusalem, where thousands had gathered. Police said protesters threw stones, which led to the arrest of 16 suspects, said spokesman.
In Gaza, the situation was tense as the Israeli bombing of the 2m line ended. Families marched on the streets for the first time in days, some waving Palestinian flags, as cars blew their horns.
But the level of depletion has thrown a cloud. I did not look around and ask who won the war - when I looked around, what I saw was death and destruction, said Ahmed Abed Rabo, 29, of Gazan.
Clashes between Israel and Hamas erupted on May 10 after the Islamic State in the Gaza Strip fired rockets into the Jewish country following tense weeks surrounding Jerusalem. Israel has responded by launching its Hamas offensive over seven years.
A total of 243 Palestinians, including women and 104, have been killed in Gaza, according to Palestinian health officials. Twelve Israelis, including two children, were killed before an Egyptian-led strike began at 2am on Friday.
Both sides claim to have succeeded, while issuing warnings. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday warned against further attacks, saying that if Hamas thinks we will tolerate rocket overflow, it is wrong. He promised to respond with a "new level of power" to any Israeli aggression.
A military official has warned that his hand is taking action, urging Israel to end the violence in Jerusalem and to repair the damage done to Gaza, Reuters reported.
The agreement was reached after the US stepped up pressure on Israel to end the Gaza bombing. The end of the fire is linked to Israel and Hamas, said Michael Stephens, a Russian strategist.
It is not surprising that the war was stopped because there are no benefits to the ongoing fighting, he said. Israel does not have a good church in terms of PR and Hamas is not gaining anything yet, there are no more protests within Israel and the benefits of their first increase are no longer and they are suffering from infrastructure.
Israeli warplanes and Baza warplanes have been attacking Gaza for more than a week, targeting Hamas troops, but they have caused extensive damage.
The Israeli Defense Forces said it had launched a crackdown on Hamas militants, adding that it had tried to reduce civilian casualties. Military service was severely limited - it took many years for Hamas, an Israeli official said. We have released their research and development, their production capacity and military technology - the reconstruction process is very complex.
Hamas, which was fighting three wars against Israel between 2009 and 2014, fired more than 4,000 rockets into Israeli cities.
The war also sparked civil strife between Arab Israelis and minority Jews, a rare issue that could not resolve Israel's political and social leaders, as well as widespread unrest.
